Exciting News for Huatulco: Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park Reopens!

by Andrea Titzer

Huatulco’s cultural and natural landscape has been enriched once again with the reopening of the Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park in La Bocana. This significant event marks a new chapter for an important regional attraction, which had been closed for two years due to funding challenges.

Now, as part of the Parque Nacional Ricardo Flores Magón, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) hosted a grand reopening ceremony for the park on September 13th. Local officials and key figures in the tourism industry and local economy gathered to celebrate.

As sponsors of the project, Bayside Real Estate continues its tradition of supporting Huatulco through various initiatives, including the local food bank, animal welfare programs, surfing, mountain biking and running events, and educational scholarships to name a few. Hector Cisneros, representing the Bayside Real Estate team, attended the reopening ceremony, supporting the certified guides and underscoring the company’s commitment to preserving and promoting Huatulco’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

In a significant move, the park’s management has been entrusted to Huatulco’s certified tour guides. This decision ensures that visitors will benefit from expert knowledge and interpretation of the park’s archaeological and ecological features.

The reopening of Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park is a substantial boost for Huatulco’s tourism sector. The site holds the distinction of being the only archaeological park open to the public on Mexico’s entire Pacific coast. La Copalita combines fascinating history in a natural setting making it a must-visit destination for residents and tourists.

Spanning over 200 acres, the park showcases diverse ecosystems including dry forest, wetlands, and the Pacific coast. It’s a paradise for birdwatchers, with 227 species of migratory birds passing through the region. While only 30-40% of the archaeological site has been excavated, it offers a glimpse into a 3000-year-old complex that predates the famous Monte Alban by about 400 years.

A highlight of the park is its spectacular viewing point, accessible by climbing 100 steps. Visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Copalita River estuary meeting the ocean on one side, and the dramatic waves of La Bocana beach on the other.

The Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park is now open Tuesday to Sunday, from 8 am to 4 pm, located at Blvd Copalita, Tangolunda Tramo 15, Bahías de Huatulco. It offers a unique experience for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone seeking to explore the wonders of Huatulco’s heritage.
