The new route, which began on April 5, will operate three times a week aboard Embraer 175 aircraft. The introduction of this route signifies a major leap for Puerto Escondido as it opens up to the world. The new connection is seen as a key step in positioning Oaxaca’s Pacific coast as an attractive destination for international travelers, offering them a convenient gateway to explore the region. As Puerto Escondido’s tourism sector continues to thrive, the new flight service to Houston reflects the growing international interest in the area, particularly as it becomes a sought-after alternative to Mexico’s more crowded resort cities. The route not only strengthens the destination’s global connectivity but also underscores the significant tourism potential of Oaxaca. The United Airlines flight departs from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and is operated by Mesa Airlines as United Express. The new connection is part of United Airlines’ broader strategy to expand its U.S.-Mexico route network. According to data from OAG Schedules Analyser, United Airlines plans to operate 48 nonstop U.S.-Mexico routes during the summer 2025 season, with 23 of those routes originating from IAH. The launch of this international flight coincides with a major infrastructure investment at Puerto Escondido International Airport. A $200 million expansion project is underway to modernize and expand the terminal, with the aim of increasing annual capacity to over 3 million passengers. The first phase of the project will improve the airport’s facilities to better accommodate the growing demand and enhance the passenger experience. Puerto Escondido has seen significant domestic growth in recent years and has become an increasingly popular destination for international travelers looking for a more laid-back, less commercialized experience compared to Mexico’s traditional resort hotspots. The addition of United Airlines’ direct flight is expected to further boost the area’s appeal, opening the door for even more international routes in the near future. With its strategic investments in infrastructure and the opening of new international routes, Puerto Escondido is poised to become a prominent player in Mexico’s tourism sector. The airport’s ongoing development will continue to support the growth of both domestic and international travel to this vibrant and scenic region.
