Huatulco Earns 4 Blue Flag Awards for the 2025–2026 Season!

by Brent May

Huatulco, located on the beautiful Pacific coast of Oaxaca, continues to distinguish itself as a leader in sustainable tourism. For the 2025–2026 season, four of its most iconic beaches—Chahué Bay, Pescadores Beach, Tangolunda Bay, and Santa Cruz Bay—have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag certification, one of the highest international honors for coastal destinations.

What Is a Blue Flag Certification?

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized eco-label awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-profit organization based in Denmark. Established in 1987, the Blue Flag program aims to promote sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas through high environmental and quality standards.

A beach, marina, or sustainable boating operator can receive a Blue Flag if it meets 33 strict criteria across four key areas:

Environmental Education and Information – The site must provide information about local ecosystems, environmental initiatives, and responsible behavior.

Water Quality – Beaches must meet excellent water quality standards, regularly tested and monitored for pollutants.
Environmental Management – Proper waste management, recycling systems, and biodiversity protection efforts must be in place.

Safety and Services – The beach must offer essential services like lifeguards, first aid equipment, clean restrooms, and safe access for all.

Each certified location undergoes annual inspections and audits to ensure it continues to meet these standards. If a beach fails to maintain compliance, the Blue Flag can be withdrawn—meaning this is not just a one-time award, but an ongoing commitment to excellence.

Why This Matters for Huatulco

Receiving four Blue Flag certifications reinforces Huatulco’s reputation as a model for responsible coastal tourism in Mexico. These beaches not only offer stunning natural beauty and world-class visitor experiences, but also serve as examples of how tourism and environmental protection can go hand-in-hand.

With the certifications awarded to Chahué, Pescadores, Tangolunda, and Santa Cruz, both locals and visitors can enjoy cleaner beaches, safer swimming conditions, and a destination that’s actively working to preserve its ecosystems for future generations.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you’re snorkeling in the clear waters of Tangolunda, relaxing on the tranquil sands of Santa Cruz, or exploring the eco-conscious charm of Chahué, Huatulco’s Blue Flag beaches offer something for every traveler—without compromising the environment.
