Playa Olas Altas

Welcome to cosmopolitan Playa Olas Altas, Mazatlán. Its city beach lifestyle, swaying palm trees, and kilometers of coastal promenade create a perfect beach lover’s destination. Nestled on Mexico’s Pacific coast, facing the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Mazatlán boasts an incredible collection of different beaches. Each stretch of sand offers a unique charm, different scenery and a variety of activities. In this blog article, we’ll take you on a journey to explore the Olas Altas beach. Whether you seek relaxation under the warm sun, thrilling water sports, or a taste of the local culture and cuisine, you’ll find so many different experiences on Mazatlán’s beaches.

Playa Olas Altas is a favorite of Mazatlan’s residents. This little, crescent-shaped, golden sand beach avoids the crowds during the week and is a delicious little piece of beachfront. You’ll find all you need here including a few small, decently priced cafés, quaint shops and lively bars.  Weekends are busier with more vacationers, surfers and cliff divers.

Of course, it is more of a surfing beach than a swimming beach for its “Olas Altas” meaning high waves. Surfing waves are best between April and October. The waves and cross currents make it more of a sunbathing beach for the rest of us beachgoers a lot of the time.

Located near the southern end of the Malécon, the coastal promenade that runs the length of the city, you’ll find a nice, relaxing vibe just blocks away from the Centro Historico. You can have a dip in the saltwater swimming pool and enjoy Mazatlan’s expansive sunsets and views of the islands.

Finish off your day with a stroll to the Centro Historico. Visit Plaza Machado and the Jose Maria Pino Suarez Market.

Getting there

Completely walkable from the center and surrounding areas, you can walk the Malécon to arrive. If you’re coming from the Golden Zone, you can take a bus direction “Sábalo Centro.”
