Golfing Mazatlan

An Authentic Destination with World-Class Resort Courses

by Brent May

We’ve fallen in love with Mazatlan again for so many reasons. It’s become so much more than just a charming, little beach town. Mazatlan is the only colonial city in Mexico right on the beach. Soak in the local history with a stroll through the colonial downtown. Enjoy ballet, opera, symphonies and theatre performances at the Angela Peralta Theatre. Check out the full cultural calendar with festivals, entertainment and activities all year long. From European influence to authentic street food flair, Mazatlan is a foodie destination.  Ride bikes or walk down the Malecon, walk up to the world’s highest natural lighthouse.  Explore its many unique boutique shops and art galleries. Spend some time at a sidewalk café enjoying the scene.

You may not have heard of Mazatlan yet as a golf destination. With over 30 kilometers of sandy white beaches along the Pacific Coast, perfect weather most of the year and 3 unique championship golf courses, Mazatlán is the ideal spot to experience authentic Mexican hospitality, outstanding cuisine and impressive oceanfront golf. Each of Mazatlan’s three courses has its own personality, style, challenges and scenery.

El Cid Country Club

Located in the heart of Mazatlan’s Golden Zone, El Cid offers 27 holes with its original course featuring 18 holes followed by the Marina 9. El Cid’s PGA-rated par 72 championship course hosts the Canadian Tour and Mexico PGA tournaments. El Cid Golf & Country Club is a scenic experience: fairways surrounded by tall palms, piñon, rubber and capiros trees with birds, turtles and iguanas. Many holes play directly along or over water on this beautiful, diverse course, which presents challenges to golfers of all skill levels.

The 3 premiere courses have their own character and boast 3 layouts: El Moro, Castilla and Marina. The Lee Trevino-designed Marina Course is friendly and open although there is water and thatch grass to manage. The Castilla and El Moro Courses are both strategic reflecting classic SoCal courses. The Castilla Course is the shortest and most strategic of the 3 at El Cid and the friendliest and most enjoyable for all levels. El Moro is the toughest of the 3 courses with a challenging and scenic layout.

El Cid has a practice putting/chipping green and driving range located beside the clubhouse. Adjacent to the golf club is El Cid’s 9-court tennis facility, a lap pool, fitness facility and spa. With a clubhouse and casual and fine dining at the Sushi Bar and Prime Grill Restaurant, you can also enjoy beverages and snacks at Hole 19, the sports bar.

Marina Mazatlan

This 18-hole par 72, David Fleming-designed course is also conveniently located in the heart of the tourism zone. It is convenient and suitable for resort golfers finishing with character and lake water. Challenging and fun for any level. The course has a driving range and putting greens as well as a Pro Shop and Snack Bar. The Marina Mazatlan course is near the amenities and shopping malls of Nuevo Mazatlan and the Marina. Marina Mazatlan is a complete golf community.

Estrella del Mar

Considered one of the best and most beautiful resort courses in Mexico, the Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed course is Mazatlan’s most complex course. Estrella del Mar Golf and Beach Resort is located 30 minutes from the historic district. The golf course is located on the resort property with 6.5 kilometers of beach. This famous course annually hosts the PGA Tour Latin America’s Mazatlan Open.

The course features enlarged and newly redesigned greens. It is Mazatlan’s only course with oceanfront views and 6 greens directly on the ocean. It spans over 178 acres with 11 lakes. It has a demanding finish as holes 15-18 play against the ocean breeze.

This par-72 course is landscaped with high palms trees and native vegetation. Estrella Del Mar is a large resort with several restaurants, a clubhouse and pro shop.

Club de Golf Campestre

Club de Golf Campestre is a 9-hole local, public golf course. With 2 sets of tees, the course is maintained, has local flavor and provides a challenging game for even seasoned golfers. The facilities are straight-forward. Lessons and caddies are available and the staff is welcoming. The course has a clubhouse with snacks and a full bar.

Pacific Food Truck Park & Golf

In addition to these three courses, the Pacific Food Truck Park & Golf has a 250-yard driving range with 20 hitting bays. The facility offers golf lessons by PGA de Mexico pros. Food trucks are present and Mulligan’s Sports Bar is a full-service sports bar and restaurant.

The list of amazing things to do in Mazatlan is long. Although Mazatlan is becoming a cosmopolitan city along the Pacific shore offering up an authentic yet cost-efficient destination, you now know Mazatlan is an authentic and cost-efficient golf destination. And Mazatlan’s three course-golf scene provide an incredible compliment to its kilometers of beachfront, its Centro Historico and general quality of life.
