Wine & Dine at Our Top 10 Favourite Huatulco Restaurants

by Brent May

huatulco restaurantsA trip to Huatulco Mexico is not just an adventure for the mind, body and spirit…it’s also an adventure for the taste buds!

You’ll be amazed by the scrumptious flavors at every turn. Street vendors, ma-and-pop restaurants and fine dining establishments are delighted to add their “bites” to the amazing food culture here in Huatulco Mexico.

As expats living in Huatulco Mexico, we have feasted on some pretty scrumptious fare. In fact, visiting friends and family always ask for referrals. So today, we’re sharing our Top 10 favourite Huatulco Restaurants with you.

Mexican Restaurants

Each region of Mexico has its own variations on herbs, spices, sauces and recipes. For example, Oaxaca grows certain types of chiles that are not found elsewhere. You’ll find them on many menus in Huatulco restaurants, including some of our favourites:

huatulco-restaurantsFrida’s Fish Taco Food Truck – Frida’s Fish Taco Food Truck is culinary happiness on wheels. Made on the spot, you’ll love their fresh and crispy shrimp, fish and nopal (cactus) tacos. For added deliciousness, top them off with homemade salsas. “Pico de piña” (pineapple) is one of our faves!

El Grillo Marinero is a quaint, open-air restaurant that has had the honour of hosting Andrew Scott Zimmern, the American chef personality from the Travel Channel series Bizarre Foods. And there’s a reason why – the food is fabulous! Family-owned El Grillo Marinero is well-known for its tender shrimp, octopus and catches of the day, such as sea snook, bream, pulpo diablo and mahi mahi. (You can even bring in your own catch to have it grilled up to perfection!)  Then finish off the meal with their homemade herb- or chili and fruit-infused Mezcal. Two thumbs up!

A Taste of Home

If you’re craving international flavors, Huatulco restaurants will happily oblige with Italian, French, Asian and Continental specialties.

For Italian cuisine, you’ll love what Mama Mia’s wood fired pizza. It’s light and thin, the perfect stage for farm-fresh ingredients. But pizza isn’t their only specialty. Mama Mia also has a full menu featuring Beef Carpaccio, Spaghetti Bolognese, Steamed Mussels, Lasagna, New York Strip Steak, Chicken Parmesan and Spinach Ravioli. Freshly baked apple strudel with a side of ice cream makes for the perfect ending to a perfect meal!

huatulco restaurants giordanaGiordana’s is the real thing – authentic Italian food for those who love fresh pasta and hearty ingredients! In fact, you might even hear an excited Italian conversation (or singing) as you dine on Spinach Ravioli, Tagliatelle, succulent chicken and juicy ribs. Be sure to bring your appetite to this quaint restaurant as the portions are generous. But be sure to leave room for Tiramisu, made with authentic ingredients such as Mascarpone. Fantastico!

For over 25 years, Swiss/French Thierry Faivre Wittwer has been serving a fine North American with a French and Asian flair at L’echalote. Dine on under the beachfront palapas with some pretty amazing dishes: French Onion Soup, Beef Carpaccio, Boeuf Bourguignon, Spaghetti Bolognese and Osso Buco. To sweeten things up, try the “to die for” Chocolate Mousse.

Kristal Rose offers a little bit of everything. For light bites, we recommend the Tortilla Soup, Cream of Broccoli Soup with Cheese Croutons and Strawberry Salad. For dinner, it’s hard to beat Kristal Roses’ fresh salmon Filet Mignon & Shrimp. The house Sangria and sweet Pears Helene will round out this lovely gastronomic experience.

Limon Bistro offers gourmet Continental dining with omelets, baked salmon, burgers and scrumptious desserts. Dine poolside for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Mansiones Cruz del Mar development in Huatulco Mexico. The views are spectacular, and the food is cooked to perfection with service to match.

Café Juanita is famous for its breakfast chilaquiles, lunchtime sandwiches and salads and creative dinner menu. You’ll love the freshly grilled tuna, juicy steaks and pork chops and melt-in-your-mouth beef filet. Seafood is always a big hit with octopus and smoked salmon baguettes. With a glass of wine in hand, enjoy the charming upstairs, open-air seating. It comes with a view of the town square. (And if you visit on a Saturday morning, be sure to stop by the farmer’s market.) We also recommend taking your food to-go for a picnic on the beach, which is just a stone’s toss away.

Best Breakfast and Lunch Bites

If you’re looking for a cozy breakfast and lunch café, then you’ve found it with the West Park Café. Start your day off right with freshly squeezed orange juice, savory espresso, flaky croissants and chocolate buns. In fact, West Park Café’s cinnamon buns are a must with a cream filling and walnuts on top. Of course, lunch is delightful with a selection of homemade sandwiches, including the supersized Max burger.

Open only in the evening, La Crema is well-loved for its amazing brick oven thin crust pizza and homemade ice cream. While you dine, enjoy the town square view and funky eclectic lounge music. And if you’re in need of souvenirs, don’t miss their gift shop, complete with Mexican flavor art, music junky artifacts and old pop culture trinkets.

i had the pleasure of staying at Brent and Erins Stay & Play pkg a few times. Brent took personal attention to making my adventure in Mexico one i am still talking about. I enjoyed the knowledge he had of all the out of the way spots for 5star dining, entertainment and all out fun that i never imagined having when i googled for info on area. The reputation Brent and his wife Erin have with the locals superseeds any resort i have been at. The managers at establishments and staff would come meet us and make sure we were looked after and wanted to meet myself and my guests. I felt truly honored the respect that was given and the heart felt hospitality from the locals. We had new years on the beach with a smorgasborg of seafood and edibles that were to die for, not to mention the wine and drinks to celebrate the evening. I would highly recomend Own Mexico and Brent and Erin May as a 5 star expierance and i look forward to going back myself very soon.. Thanks again Brent and Erin.
