Home Beaches Zapotengo Zapotengo by Brent May October 9, 2020 by Brent May 4.7K Zapotengo is a long, open sea beach about midway between Huatulco and Pochutla. From the Federal Highway 200 turnoff, you will follow a dirt road out to sea. It is an interesting drive winding through some small hamlets that live off of agriculture. Be sure to buy some fruit and other products on your way back home. The beach has fine, white sand with some rocks for exploring. The waves come in big here. It is a walking beach, not a swimming beach. The uniqueness of Zapotengo is that it is a no frills, no commerce beach. Just wilderness and a whole lot of space. This beach should be reserved for when you’re feeling up to a drive, some discovery and being open to whatever you find. Zapotengo was the site of an ecotourism project that has gone by the way-side for the time being. A large laguna with endemic plants, water lilies and azucenas, birds and some crocodiles is located here. You may see some people fishing in the laguna, occasionally offering boat rides. Sometimes during high traffic seasons, you may be able to have some quesadillas at a palapa. Or just pack a lunch, sit in the shade of the rocks and enjoy the salty breeze after a long walk. 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail Brent May Brent May is the GM and Founder of Mexico Living.
