Puerto Escondido is getting a lot of attention. It’s “the” place to be in Mexico for its beaches, amenities and affordable lifestyle. As one of Time Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places for 2021, beautiful properties just steps away from the ocean or on hills and cliffs with spanning views both in town and 20-30 minutes away are selling quickly. So why does everyone flock to Puerto Escondido? Great value. To live in affordable oceanfront homes, beachfront condos, and apartments that are close to town but far enough away to provide that much-needed peace and quiet. Incredible beachfront. Not only do the properties available have gorgeous ocean views with large terraces, infinity pools and bbq areas, the homes in town are walking distance to shopping, restaurants and services. Convenient local transportation is available both in and out of town. The Puerto Escondido airport is located 10 minutes from the center of town. Convenient amenities & great dining. Puerto, as it is locally called, is a town full of conveniences with many health care options, shopping and grocery choices, and rich, local markets full of fresh produce year round. A foodie destination for fine dining or street tacos, you’ll love discovering all of them. Warm atmosphere and refreshing social life scene. Puerto attracts expats from all over the world who want to experience the true “Mexican beach town” feel on an everyday basis. There is literally something for every taste and budget in Puerto Escondido. Whether you are a retiree, a surfer, a hippie or a family with children, you will find an incredible lifestyle. The Beaches Yes, the beaches are all beautiful and have their distinct personalities. You choose your beach according to what you’d like to do. Sunbathe, swim, snorkel, release baby turtles. Here’s a quick look at Puerto’s beaches. Playa Zicatela Playa Zicatela ranks as one of our favorites. It’s the biggest beach, about 3 kilometers long. Not always swimmable because it is open sea, it is the surf scene. So head down to watch the sun dip into the ocean, and watch the homegrown surfers ride the waves. It’s also a great beach to have dinner with your feet in the sand. Walk up to the viewpoint for a long view of the entire beach. La Punta At the end of the beach, La Punta Zicatela has the best waves for intermediate surfers, a relaxed hippie vibe and a genuine Mexican pueblo feel. There are a few palapas where you can sit in lounge chairs. Otherwise take your blanket and watch the sunset or join in a pick-up game of volleyball. Playa Bahia Principal Continuing on from Zicatela, the Bahia Principal forms a smaller, protected bay, great for swimming even for children. During high vacation periods, this place is bubbling with kids and vendors. This is one of the instances where the food comes to you on the beach. Coastal walk between the beaches We recommend taking this beautiful walk that starts at the end of the Bahia principal and goes all the way to Playa Carrizalillo. You will have great views of Puerto Escondido and see lots of birds. Playa Carrizalillo Playa Carrizalillo is without a doubt the most beautiful beach in town. It is a small bay protected by rocky outcroppings with an incredible view. You can swim and snorkel here. Beginner surfers will find their first waves here. Accessed by a loooong staircase, it is a lovely place to lounge. Playa Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito These beaches are in the same crescent-shaped bay. Playa Manzanillo has a beautiful view, calm water and seafood restaurants. Many local families come to swim and picnic. It’s a great option to spend a day for swimming and sipping a margarita. Puerto Angelito is a tiny fishing port that can be accessed by taxi. You can walk from here to Playa Manzanillo which has fewer stairs than Carrizalillo. Playa Bacocho Playa Bacocho is further down. It’s an amazing beach for walking, there is lots of space and few people, but waves here are strong so swimming is not recommended. It is your space for the meditative days or long walks with friends. Playa Coral is another small tranquil beach that continues on from Bacocho. The Experiences Puerto is so much more than beaches. The nature surrounding Puerto Escondido is grandiose. You will have a full agenda discovering the unique sites and activities around Puerto. Swim with the dolphins, observe the whales. It never gets old. Go out on the marine tours and observe whales, dolphins and sea turtles. They love it here. Puerto Escondido’s waters are protected. A 280-square kilometer zone off the coast here is designated a protected whale watching zone. Read more about the protected zone here: https://mexicoliving.com/join-us-for-awe-inspiring-whale-watching-in-a-newly-protected-zone/ Surf, snorkel, dive, swim. Puerto has beaches for every skill level including novice. Take surf lessons, meet new friends, try it out. Always wanted to scuba dive? This is your chance to learn. Check it out here. See the bioluminescence in the Manialtepec lagoon. Experiencing bioluminescence in the Manialtepec lagoon is a must-do activity in the region if you have never done it before. Combined with a bird watching tour and sunset on a sandbar, this is an incredible way to get to know the local ecosystems. Dancing salsa in Puerto Escondido. There are plenty of places to learn salsa and dance the night away. Zicatela has most of the bars and clubs. And much more like horse riding to hot springs, ziplining in the jungle and hiking around a coffee plantation. Also Puerto has many charitable organizations where you can volunteer some time to the community and meet new friends.
